Dave Phinney’s newest
Cheers Wines & Spirits was thrilled to receive our allocation of Dave Phinney’s new Orin Swift Cellars’ second vintage (2017) of 8 Years in the Desert. Eight limited-edition bottles are set to be released yearly. Dave Phinney’s love for Zinfandel started 20 years ago, which grew into the well-known wine called The Prisoner. The Prisoner is a modern-day wine success story. Phinney crafted a contemporary version of the of the California field blend — Zinfandel with portions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Charbono. This wine consistently earned outstanding reviews from Wine Spectator and appeared on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list multiple times. When Dave sold The Prisoner, he opted not to use the Zinfandel varietal in a non-compete clause for eight long years. Last year, the eight years were up, and 8 Years in the Desert was born.
This stunning blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah is now available at Cheers Wines & Spirits. 8 Years in the Desert will fly off the shelves at $49.99. The first vintage (2016 and only available through Orin Swift’s Wine Club and website) received a staggering score of 94+ points from Robert Parker. “Deep garnet- purple colored, the 2016 vintage (a blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah) comes bounding out of the glass with notes of raspberry pie, blackberry preserves and fruitcake with touches of hoisin and Chinese five spice plus a waft of underbrush. Full-bodied, rich, and spicy in the mouth, 8 Years in the Desert packs in the black fruit preserves, framed by chewy tannins and finishing on a savory note.” This 2017 vintage has not yet been rated, but our sources who tasted both say its just as wonderful as the 2016. Don’t hesitate! Come snag your bottle to add to your collection or enjoy right away from Cheers Wines & Spirits!
